How a teleprompter works
What each part of the rig does, why presenters can look straight down the lens while reading, and how to build the same thing in a browser.
What a teleprompter actually is
A teleprompter shows your script near the camera lens and scrolls it at the pace you speak. The point is not the text itself, it is where the text sits. When the words are close to the lens, you can read them and still appear to be looking at the person on the other side.
Everything else exists to serve that. The mount, the glass, the speed control: all of it is there so someone can read without looking like they are reading.
The four parts of a teleprompter

The script
Text written to be spoken rather than read on paper: short sentences, marked pauses, and names spelled the way they sound. EasyPrompter lets you import Word (.docx) or text files directly, adding section markers and timed pauses for natural breathing room.

The display
Shows the script to the presenter near the camera lens. Modern setups can drive a connected second monitor directly or use wireless Remote Casting to beam synchronized text to tablets, laptops, or any device with a browser.

The control
Someone sets the scroll speed, pauses, and jumps between sections. While traditionally a second person on set, modern setups let solo presenters control pace with a gesture phone remote, wireless clicker, or foot pedal.

The glass
A beam splitter reflects the display toward the presenter while the camera shoots through it. Software-side horizontal and vertical flip mirrors the reflection without expensive hardware converter boxes.
Pace is the part most people get wrong
A teleprompter that scrolls at a fixed speed forces the presenter to keep up with the machine, and that is what makes a read sound flat. The right way round is the opposite: whoever is controlling follows the speaker, easing the speed and pausing when the speaker pauses.
It is also why the cue marker matters. A fixed line on the display tells the presenter where to read, so their eyes stay in one place instead of tracking down the screen.
The same thing, in a browser
None of the four parts needs dedicated hardware. A laptop screen under a webcam is already a teleprompter display. A phone is already a control.
